Richard,
What a great essay you just wrote. I remember my first encounter with the BSA 441 Starfire Scrambler. My first bike was a 1962 Triumph Bonnie (two carbs, wow). 650 cc and lots of foot peg and handle bar tickle. I thought it was fast until I started riding with a friend who had a HD Sportster. What would that have been?, 883 cc that they called a 900? Up until two months ago when I took my MC test to renew my endorsement, I knew nothing of the Savage. I was out looking at Shadows and Sportsters and saw the Savage and sat on it. I went home and checked out its vitals on the web and went back to the shop and drove it home. I love the simplicity of the single cyl., etc. I recently did the 600 mile service and got great help from MAX from this site with some questions about the head. I like your comment about more than what you need is too much. Didn't we used to call that a "herman" ? Let me know if that clicks.
Well, I sure like the way the bike moves now with the white spacer gone and a 155 main jet. It handles so well, I wish all the streets were like River Road that winds and curves and dips.
Even though I'm only 5'8" I find myself riding on an inch or two of the passenger seat to get my arms and legs comfortable. I am thinking about changing the handle bars but I really didn't want to put forward foot controls on.
Stay safe and thanks for the trip to the past.
Richard D.
